How To Be A Conscious Consumer

FullSizeRender.jpg

I have had so many clients ask my opinion on beauty products, what I think , and why is it that I don't get hyped on the next new product!?

As we know there are millions of products out there that are there to make money. They are allowed to exaggerate results and do it at our expense LEGALLY ! It is because as women we love the thought that our cure to split ends and wrinkles are all in one jar. We have allowed this to happen and now we leave confused. However the reality of beauty is that it takes work and encompasses more than one amazing product. I relate it to weight loss; if you go to the gym (salon) but then go home and eat potato chips (a non professional product) then obviously you will not achieve the results you are looking for.  I try not to put all of my eggs in one basket. I know and understand how professional products work what makes their ingredients better. Therefore I don't get hyped about a product until I do the research behind it to know if it would work for me or my clients !

In the salon world we only commit to products that are transparent and  committed to excellence. In most Salons it is all about being exclusive to us , giving us education, and creating products that work ! This leaves the guess work out for you, knowing that your stylist did the research and is giving you a quality product based on science .

So what happens when we leave the salon ? What products do we choose ? What makes other brands better than others?

RESEARCH!

Know your sources:

Sometimes bloggers get paid big bucks to endorse products they don't even believe in. So you must know who is giving you information and why. This is why stylists tell you what products to use because we have done the research and we understand the chemistry of hair! Once you are out in the drugstore it is up to you with no additional education what to put on your skin and hair ! Little do we realize this is a huge decision and can affect us and our results greatly. Especially when not used or mixed together correctly ! How did we forget that THIS IS SCIENCE PEOPLE!

Trust your professionals who can give you educated answers and when you want to be more informed always do your research !

For consumers I have found a website called Skin Deep to be very accurate and informative  . They give you toxicity levels and guidelines to make an informed decision.

When we realize scientifically speaking  that the food we ingest is considered "chemicals"/ "Drugs"; that just because it is natural does not mean it is for everyone; the better and more educated our decisions will be.

Must Have Books:

Don't Go to The Cosmetics Counter Without me - Paula Begoun

The Original Beauty Bible -Paula Begoun

I love these two books because Paula breaks down everything you need to know about beauty products and their ingredients ! This is mostly for skin care and not hair but it will definitely give you insight into making more educated and informed decisions .

I hope this helps you in finding products that work for you! When in doubt trust the professionals!

Let us know how you make more educated decisions ? What sources and products do you use ?

Olaplex VS Brazilian Bond Builder

FullSizeRender.jpg

As we know there are so many products out there especially in the bond building world since Olaplex came about. We thought we would compare two very popular bond builders as we always want to keep a open mind and ensure we are using the right products for our clients.

As you can see (in the photo above) we bought the capsules of the B3 to try without having to purchase the whole system. We also did not use a real model just in case!

 The Experiment

1) We started by mixing our products with the exact same lightner (wella) and the same peroxide (30vol). We also used 1oz of lightner per bowl and mixed per manufacturers directions !

Mixing ratio 1oz of lightner to 1/4oz of B3. They also recommend bumping up! We just left it at 30vol

Mixing ratio 1oz of lightner to 1/4oz of B3. They also recommend bumping up! We just left it at 30vol

Side Note:

Mixing per the manufacturers directions is so important!

If we do not mix according to how the product is made the product cannot and will not be as effective as it could have been.

Directions are given based on research and science so don't mess with it.

Olaplex 1oz of lightner and 1/8oz of Olaplex. Olaplex now no longer needs to be bumped up! We still used 30vol. We also used a scale to be even more precise and leave less room for error.

2) We then left the lightner on our mannequin for a total of one hour in a foil! We also marked an O (for Olaplex) on the mannequins head to ensure that we didn't get our test foils mixed up during the process!

We wait ! I have to admit we did sneak a peak around the 30min mark. No heat was applied !    3) After the full hour was complete for each side We then rinsed! As you know Olaplex is a 2 step system in salon and we completed those steps accordingly at the basin.

For the B3 there are no other steps needed in salon. There are take home products such as a treatment, shampoo, and conditioner.

4) We added no product to the hair and began blow drying. We did not want any other product adjusting our results. As we want to  know how the hair feels using only the bond builders.

 CONCLUSION

As you can see the B3 lifted the hair slightly lighter. However when we look at the ends we can see that they are a little more rough and not quite as smooth as the Olaplex.

Both products felt amazing at the root however the B3 ends felt dry and more damaged than Olaplex.

In the end we felt that BOTH products are a must in every salon as they help cover together all salon needs.

Olaplex is an amazing system for clients needing serious repair. It would also be the best option if your salon can only afford one system right now. With how the hair felt compared to the B3 shows how much more effective it was at preserving and repairing the integrity of the hair. However it may not be a option for some stylists or clients who can be impatient with the additional treatment step or wanting to go lighter faster. ( keep in mind Lighter faster isn't always possible even with bond builders )

Brazilian Bond Builder B3 may not be as amazing at repairing damage but it was equally effective at prevention! This product would be great for clients with currently healthy hair wanting to prevent damage or undergoing a large change. I also love that they have a shampoo conditioner and masque. Using the masque would also help soften the rough ends we noticed after lightning.

All in all we were quite pleased with both lines. We liked them both for different salon situations below is how we will categorize them by use in our salon.

Olaplex = Repair + Prevention.

Brazillian Bond Builder B3 = Prevention

Miracle Makeover

FullSizeRender.jpg

As most of you know we wanted to spread some holiday magic by giving  someone within our community the gift of a makeover.

We hand picked a candidate that we felt would really benefit from this gift . It was so difficult to choose just one. There was one particular email we just couldn't put down and so we knew that this was our gal!

We were so excited to spend some time with our Miracle Makeover winner and her daughter. When they arrived she expected the Makeover however she did not expect all the gifts that we were able to collect for her from other local businesses.

They hardly fit at my station !

They hardly fit at my station !

We really enjoyed giving this gift and we couldn't be happier to share this Makeover with you ! We took her hair from a bland box colour and made her hair look as beautiful as she is.

Damaged Hair?

IMG_5901.JPG

There are many ways hair can become damaged. It is a combination of many factors and is not always caused by salon visits.

Whatever the history of your hair there are many ways to repair damage without cutting it all off. ...I know thank goodness !

As we know healthy hair is the most beautiful, but it does take team work and a plan to bring damaged hair back to life. You cannot expect amazing results unless you do the work at home. What you do 90% of the time will determine your results. It is the combination of at home care and salon visits that will help transform your hair into the desired look and health!

Below we have outlined some steps towards healthier hair!

1. Know and understand the different types of Damage

When you understand how damage is created then you can better understand the steps to prevent it.

Physical Damage:

Did you know that physical damage is the most common and has the most drastic effect on the hair ? This type of damage is caused by brushing too hard on wet hair, curling, straightening, playing with , and styling your hair. This damage can be prevented by using proper tools and products like a wet brush, invisibobbles, leave in conditioner and heat protectants.

Environmental Damage:

This includes water, minerals from water, sun, wind, air temperature and humidity. Depending on the environment you live in your concerns will be different. This is why we recommend clarifying shampoos, PH balanced shampoos, water softener, and any leave in product with UV protection.

 Chemical:

This type of damage is caused by box  and professional colour. When seeing a professional we can minimize this type of damage with the products we use. This is very controlled and not always the leading contributor to the damage present on most hair types. We now have products like Olaplex referred to as bond builders to rebuild and add strength to your hair during the chemical process. If your stylist carries these options we reccomend using these great treatments to help repair and prevent any damage.

2. Stay consistent with salon visits

Now that you understand the types of damage you can probably see the benefit of visiting your stylist. When we know your routine we can create a plan to help nourish your hair at home and in salon. Regular hair cuts will also minimize damage and are necessary every 8-10 weeks. At Vocare we offer complimentary spilt end trims in between visits to help minimize further damage. This great technique rids you of your split ends without having to cut off any length! This time also allows us to check in and ensure you are keeping up with a routine that will help you achieve all of your hair goals!

3. Olaplex all the way !

As you know we love Olaplex ! Olaplex is an amazing reparative treatment that is great for all hair types. It can be used alone or with any salon service and can be tailored to your needs. It is a must for those with dry or damaged hair and is a great addition for those who want extra shine and moisture. We can only do so much in one visit therefore for amazing results you can schedule the treatment in salon before and after any chemical service to offer more strength and integrity to the hair. This treatment isn't keratin based so you cannot overdue it and it will not cause the hair to be brittle. The more you use it the better the results will  be. To maintain what is achieved in the salon the Olaplex No.3 is taken home to help see lasting results and add the needed moisture to hair that is damaged.

4. At home care. Your must have products!

For hair that is damaged or to maintain beautiful hair here is a list of must have products that we recommend.

  • Reparative Shampoo and Conditioner
  • Olaplex No.3 treament used once a week or every two weeks
  • Leave in Conditioner
  • Heat Protectant spray that is applied on dry hair before hot styling
  • Proper comb or wet brush that prevents you tugging on tangled hair
  • Hair ties or clips to prevent stress on hair and breakage from tying hair too tightly
  • light oil that you can apply throughout the day as needed to help create slip in the hair. It can help prevent environmental damage, damage from friction on clothes and damage caused by tangling.

5. Split ends

You cannot let these go to long without cutting them off. This is why maintaining salon visits is so important. If you let your split ends go to long they will split the hair strand in two; causing damage and fuzzy looking hair.

6. Natural Remedies

Natural remedies have their place but so does science. Many natural products help with dryness however they are topical products that only offer temporary and short lasting results. Topical products have molecules that are too large to penetrate the hair to actually offer strength and moisture where the damage actually occurs. This is why treatments like Olaplex are revolutionary and are now used in almost every salon. Science based technology creates molecules that can enter the cortex of the hair repairing damage where is happens and offering long lasting moisture.

7. Supplements

Whenever clients want to introduce supplements we always ask that they consult their doctor or naturopath before hand . Supplements are amazing when your body is lacking the nutrients needed to produce healthy hair. They can also be prescribed for the prevention of hair loss. A healthy individual following all the other steps should see results and not need additional help. Our bodies are an intricate network of systems and many factors can cause the need for supplements. Supplementation should always be monitored and research should always be done before introducing it to your diet.

We hope touching on this topic has helped you . For any additional questions please email us !

How to Dress Professional In the Workplace

To me professionalism is the way you carry yourself it is not always measured by the way you dress. If you are authentic to who you are , confident, and know what message you want to convey to others around you; how you dress can be a very powerful tool.

In the professional world casual work attire is becoming more acceptable and in my industry there can be many grey areas. These grey areas allow us to build our own brand and create attention around our look. They can create a very interesting  opportunity  to express ourselves and be noticed when used properly. Grey areas can become negative when we lack the understanding of what we wear and the message it sends to those around us.

No ripped jeans and a baggy t-shirt do not convey the message of professionalism when thrown on. However when paired with an interesting jacket and accessories this look goes from a day off to polished.  Be confident the the message you send others, how people perceive you is based on how you see yourself. Whatever you choose to express ensure that it is the best version of yourself.

When I dress myself I like to play dress up. I think about my mood, what message I want to share, and how much I truly want to stand out in a crowd. For me what I wear is completely mood based and changes daily. I understand now through experimenting what I feel good in, what helps me feel confident and what is appropriate based on the event I'm attending.

I urge you to experiment on your days off. Notice based on what you wear what kind of attention you receive. When we know ourselves, body type and how others react to us we can have power in fashion.

Living in Okotoks there are many artistic and fashion forward individuals who own stores and can help guide you if you tend to get lost in the array of styles out there. I visited three of my favourite stores within the Foothills to help showcase looks that can be versatile and used at home or within my workplace(salon).

Mint and Maple

I love visiting the little green house on Elma street in Okotoks. They carry a wide variety of patterns, tops, dresses and bags to choose from in this store. The Owner Natalie creates a warm and inviting atmosphere to shop in which is a perfect place to experiment and get some advice. We created together a look that sends a message of professionalism but with some artistic flair. We chose interesting and bold patterns to create more playfulness within these looks. Don't be afraid to be BOLD

 Rhoda's Elegance Again

Rhoda's is a consignment store on Elisabeth Street in Okotoks. I love consignment as it's all about "the find" for me. They carry so much selection and I seem to always find a great pair of boots there. It's definitely my go to when I'm on a budget or want to browse while not breaking the bank. I wanted to prove that second hand can be professional and that you do not always need new items to look current. Rhoda's and I worked together to create some looks that I think have a very polished and professional feel. I'm also very happy to say that each look was no more then a $100.00! If you do not know how consignment works I suggest your check it out ASAP!

Pixie Hollow

Pixie Hollow is located on 1st Street SW in High River. I love going there to look at the one of a kind pieces she has as well as her books(Yes, I am a book worm). Their slogan is Books, Clothing and Lovely things. That only begins to explain the unique experience they create. If you go into Calgary to Shop at Anthropologie I'd suggest you stop at Pixie Hollow first. You will not be disappointed. We worked together to create a unique look that could go to the cabin or workplace. Having a couple of high quality pieces in a wardrobe are a must when it comes to looking professional. Both of us wanted to show you this with these unique pieces from France and Amsterdam. It only takes one piece to "wake up" an old wardrobe. Let Pixie Hollow be your place to wander, explore and create a look with some high quality investment pieces.

As you can see each store has their unique flair and approach to fashion. I love shopping at all different types of stores to have an assortment of original looks that make me feel unique and one of a kind. I hope this encourages you to shop local and experiment with your style.

A huge thank you to the stores and photographer Karen Chernecki that allowed this blog post to happen!

I strongly believe in working with others who are like minded within my community to help growth, awareness and create a conscious community. All of us have something special to offer and I hope this blog inspires you to explore your uniqueness and utilize the power of fashion.

Mentorship With A Mindful Mission

Author Unknown

Author Unknown

So I've decided to dive in and make this blog post a little more personal.

Today I received a text from one of my clients urging me to watch a Soul Sunday Episode and may I  say I'm so glad I did. It made me realize that more people understand my heart then those who do not.

For a long time in my industry I felt misunderstood and so as anyone would I started to believe the negative things I would hear about myself. This urged me to branch out on my own,  to break free of the negative and limiting thought process I was accustomed too. Most of us go through moments of not feeling good enough, whether we tell ourselves this or others tell us it.  Seeing this first hand throughout my career and relationships I started to realize how much we forget to have compassion with and for one another.

In the beauty industry our ego can be a hard thing to overcome, but what I have realized is none of us get to where we are going without the help of another. When I realized how hard my heart was becoming due to the lack of compassion people around me had;  I knew things needed to change. I needed to change. I created my mentorship programs to create constructive dialogue with stylists to help them see themselves differently and to  accomplish their goals.

I found many salons groom stylists to be more like them instead of allowing them to grow based on the individuals strengths and desires. My hope is to help lift others up as there is a place for all of us. I am passionate about helping others and guiding them to be the best that they can be.  I want anyone who has invested in their education with me to feel powerful in their strengths and not ashamed of their weaknesses. To know that when things get tough they have a foundation to rely on and to help them to continue to grow.

I thought I would share this episode with you to help you better understand the internal dialogue and purpose I had while creating my mentorship programs. My mission is to create a more conscious beauty community with more compassion and guidance to those who need it. I urge you to click the link below and watch how the CEO of LinkedIn shares our belief of a more compassionate workplace.

Make sure your hair has not been washed the same day ! Clean hair is never ideal especially if you have fine slippery hair. We love second day hair so you may wash your hair 24 hours prior to styling. Prepping the hair is the most important part of a style ! We used from root to end going section by section Kenra Dry texture spray to help give the hair more grit We then used Kenra texture powder going in sections on the root to help with volume and lift . Believe it or not texture will help the bobby pins grab the hair better and help it be more secure.

 Step 2

Section your hair into 4 sections. Top, two sides, and leave the back to play with. These sections do not need to be perfect so just do your best !

Section

Section

Step 3

Now you may take medium-small sections and curl your mid-lengths to ends. We just want to help smooth the ends to create some structure. Spray each section with Kenra #25 super hold hair spray. When not doing up styles on a regular basis please use a heat protection spray. For this look we want a firm and secure hold so once and a while hair spray and heat is permitted just please watch and feel the hair at all times.

 Step 4

Now use your fingers once the curl is cool and break up the curl a bit. We aren't looking for perfection here.

Step 5

Secure into a low ponytail. It does not need to be tight and smooth. Just ensure it is tight enough to feel secure . Make sure it is placed on the side you want the majority of your hair.

Low side ponytail

Step 6

Now move to your side section that is furthest away from where your ponytail sits. We will braid this section towards the face. Spray Kenra #13 working hair spray to help secure the braid and any loose ends.

Make sure you keep around the ear soft

Use three strand technique. Braid in the direction you want to go. Finish braid and secure with hair tie.

Step 7

Move to the other front section and Use the same 3 strand braid technique but directing hair towards the ponytail/away from the face.

Away from the face 3 strand braid Secure braid with tie and leave.

Step 8

Move to the top/crown section and begin back combing to create some height. You may even want curl the ends to smooth them out just like that back section.

We like to back comb first and then curl

Curling ends

When back combing think about how you want the hair to lay. We went on an angle to keep it soft and have the braid lay easily over top of this section . Always pick the side with the most natural volume.

Once done leave this section aside for later.

Step 9

Find your headband and place underneath your ponytail. Secure the top of the head band with a clip so it doesn't move while styling.

Place band under ponytail

Place band under ponytail

Step 10

Begin wrapping hair from the ponytail under and around the headband and securing each step with bobby pins moving from one side to the other. You may cross your bobby pins in a X formation to ensure a more secure feel.

Once your back section is secured begin to bring back your top/crown section. This section will come back and around the headband the same way the pony tail did.

The Big Bad Box Colour.

image.jpg

We all know that Box Colouring your hair is not ideal. So why are so many men and women still doing it ?

I believe it is due to the lack of education but also the fact that high profile beauty leaders still include this wise idea in magazines and literature. Just because it is in a reputable magazine does not mean it is worth considering. The fact of the matter is your hair needs to be important to you for you to realize the long term damage you are doing to your hair ! I understand that we all have different priories but always talk to your stylist before even contemplating box colour. There are many affordable ways to achieve beautiful hair so please do not be ashamed to talk to your stylist about your budget or colours that can be affordable.

In today's society we love DIY's but this can lead to a lack of respect for trades people especially beauty technicians. Hair design is an art and it takes knowledge as well as  years of pracitce to create beautiful hair. Just because you saw it on you tube does not mean you are an expert. This is the reason I feel the need to blog, pass knowledge on , and try to always reference science and factual based information for you. I want to help create mindful consumers to help foster a better beauty community. When we know better we do better.

Below are  concerns about box colour and common mistakes we all make when colouring at home that I would like to share with you.

1.  Unpredictable results.

Do you believe in one size fits all pants ? Most women would say no . As we know every person is unique so why does this thought process stop when it comes to hair ? Box colour is made for the average hair texture and can in no away adjust and change based on your needs. It is made with a stronger chemical process to ensure efficacy. As we know the stronger the chemicals the more likely you are to have damaged hair, brittle hair, different colour changes and allergic reactions. In short it is unpredictable. Did you know that your formula is adjusted depending on the % of grey present in the hair ? So when the box says grey coverage it is very vague and depending on the colour you can deposit a completely different tone onto the roots if the formula is incorrect.  So please spare yourself the guessing game and consult with your stylist because every colour formula we mix is made for you and considers that you are one of a kind.

2. Are you on medication?

This is another thing that can change the outcome of your colour. At home or in salon. Apply colour at home and you have a higher risk of undesired reactions. Yes this can also happen in salon but we have greater control of the outcome and usually will catch it before the damage is permanent, especially if you let us know prior to the application.

3. When $10.00 turns into $300.00!

You think you just need a toner ? Wrong ! I don't mean to be brash here but once you try at home colour dark or light there will be more to it then you think ! Most of the time because of the chemical make up of box colour it will take multiple services to get you back to your desired colour. Now we need to asses the damage, correct any unwanted tones, and it will likely take 2-4 steps to do this properly. So that quick fix you thought it would be will end up having you wishing you came in to see us first.

4.  Why can't I get my desired result after box colour ? Why can't I get my fingers through my hair ?

These common questions usually come back to the chemical makeup of the product. Box colour or colour from Sally's is harsh and usually discontinued or expired for obvious reasons. The culprit here is the metallic salts that are present that  react with the sulfur in hair protein. Which causes in most cases uneven colour and damage.  Metallic Salts alter the Di-sulfide bond in the hair which is a major bond contributing to hair strength. It alters the bond over time which is why most people with prolonged use cannot get their fingers through their hair, or it lacks shine. Metallic salts cause this colour to be what we call a progressive dye. This means the more you apply the colour the darker or more saturated it can get leaving demarcation and a variety of shades over time and multiple applications. Metallic salts are also present in henna which causes chemical reactions when you see us at the salon. The more colour you apply the more limited within the salon you will be. Oh did I mention the hair can bubble, completely break down and even emit harmful gases when mixed with a salon product ? If this doesn't scare you straight I don't know what will.

5. Custom Colour and Precision

Hair stylists dedicate a lot of time to perfecting their craft. We also see things from a perspective you cannot when hanging over your sink. I always say to my clients "If I don't do my own hair and I'm a professional, maybe you shouldn't either".  Believe it or not there are many amazing stylists out their able to accommodate your needs . They are also able to use tailored formulas with guaranteed results when used correctly. When using box colour you need to be more precise than ever especially because it is so harsh and progressive. The more you overlapp the more damaged your hair will be . I don't think precision is possible at home own your own.

6. Shiney hair is beautiful hair

No matter what your budget is we can all agree that when hair is healthy it truly is the most beautiful. If you cannot invest in a high maintence colour consider doing a consultation to discuss more options. Keeping your hair healthy with regular cuts, treatments, and proper at home care should be a priority. Colouring is a luxury and there are afforable options. Just be sure you are willing to make the maintence a priority. Trust me regardless of colour if you have a great cut and healthy hair you will turn heads.

7. So your still box colouring eh ?

So if I haven't convinced you yet and your still reading the directions on how to box colour please note that those directions hardly encompass the do's and don'ts of colouring. It will say too comb through which as we know causes overlapp and damage to the hair. So here are some tips to minimize your risk! ( I can't believe I'm telling you this )

1. Be as precise as possible

2. If you are just doing the roots please just apply to your regrowth

3. If you are changing your whole colour only ever go slightly darker then your current shade. Lightening will turn you yellow, green, and orange.

4. If you are blonde don't do it ! You will only go green or brassy no matter what shade you choose.

5. If you pull through colour consider mixing in a treatment or conditioner in with your box colour after you have applied to the re growth. Then apply to the ends.

6. If the first box didn't cover or work please don't try to use another colour to try and "fix it". 90% of the time your just making it worse!

7. Or you know... You can put it down.... Slowly back away and pretend you never bought it ...Trust me your hair will thank you.

How to Maintain A Colourful Mane

We see so many people becoming more playful with the variation of hair colours. As a hairstylist I get so excited to play with colour for my clients, especially when it is one that can be noticed a mile away. There are some things to consider before committing to a fashion colour. Like any change a new routine needs to be implemented. Here we will outline what to expect during a drastic change .  We will also include some tried, tested and true tricks to help your colour to continue to look fresh long after you leave the salon.

Before and After

Before and After

1.     Level of Commitment

How badly do you want this colour? Will you do anything to have it ?

I always discuss the level of my clients commitment to truly understand how to approach the placement of colour, and what I need to do to achieve the best result possible. With fashion colours we need more commitment from our clients and they should like spending time at the salon as the first session can be time consuming. When considering a fashion color consider the level of commitment; will you do what is needed for at home care ? How long do you want to play with this colour? The more willing you are to put the work in the more adventurous the colours and placement can be. The less work the more subtle and cautious I would be with fashion colours ! So please understand to achieve great results and maintain them you need to be committed to the change !

2.  This service is considered a colour correction.

If you are willing to put the time in at home then please understand the expertise and time (in salon) it will take for this change to occur. Unless you come in with platinum hair changing to any colour takes time. Colour corrections in the salon means that more then one chemical process is needed to achieve the desired look, and more than 2 levels of lift is needed . What some people do not realize is depending on the results desired it may take multiple steps to achieve amazing and vibrant color. For all color corrections most salons charge per hour to help cut down on cost in the long run. At Vocare Hair Studio we ensure any correction is accompanied by multiple Olaplex treatments to help preserve the health of the hair. It also allows us to maintain the hairs integrity so we can push the boundaries a lot more to achieve the desired colour. This does take time but you will thank us later. When you agree to a colour correction you are basically saying to your stylist "do whatever it takes". Please make sure this process is done with a trusted stylist. We know hair has limits and you need someone knowledgeable enough to know when to stop to prevent unnessasry damage to the hair. This may cost more initially but it will be so worth it in the long run.

3. Treatments are a Must!

Ensuring that your hair is healthy is essential to maintaining any vibrant colour. So do not try and cut cost in this department when going for a big change. When the hair is healthy it will hold the colour molecules in longer because it is more resistent to the elements( sun, water , shampoo ,hot tools). I relate hair to scales on a fish. The outside of the hair has scales that open and close known as the cuticle. When healthy they are closed trapping in the essentials (colour, moisture , keratin ). When the hair is unhealthy the scales/cuticle are open allowing everything quickly in and releasing it quickly (which is why your colour may fade quickly). Obviously this is tricky but maintaining healthy hair will help the longevity of your color . Some people believe treatments containing keratin or protein are bad after color as those molecules will push out the color causing your color to fade. This has not been proven and  Olaplex is not made with large keratin molecules so sorry there is no getting out of this step. As stated before you will thank us later.

4. Never wash your hair

If that didn't feel so gross this would be ideal. The less you wash your hair the less likely you are to have fading. So please still wash your hair but try to limit it as much as possible. Using a proper shampoo ( Color Safe, Sulfate Free) will help keep the hair cuticle closed. Using shampoo that is not recommended by a stylist will cause fading and will be much more abrasive to the hair. To keep the colour looking great remember shampoo is for the scalp, conditioner on the ends. Conditioner when Professional is PH balanced helping the hair cuticle to stay closed locking in the colour . If you keep this tip in mind you will notice less colour being washed out and down the drain. Washing with cold of water or as cold as you can stand will also prevent the hair cuticle from opening ! This means the colour is being locked in and will also help your hair look healthy and shiny. Which will help your colour look that much more vibrant.

5.  UV Protection

Products with UV protection are amazing to help your colour stay strong. The sun can increase fading unless you use the proper conditioners. I recommend when the hair is wet regardless if you blow dry or air dry , a leave-in should be applied and combed through. Why wouldn't you want your hair to stay soft and shiny while keeping the fading at bay! This one is easy and a no brainer.

5. Hot tools

We always recommend to keep hair healthy and to prevent damage (which can also cause fading) a heat protection spray should be applied ! These usually also have UV protection and will help keep the suns rays damaging effects to a minimum. If you are disregarding this step when you see fumes coming from your hot tool remember that essentially it is baking the moisture out of your hair. When a spray is applied it acts as a barrier while its fumes are being heated off it deposits moisture and added benefits to the hair. Instead of your hair taking the full force of the hot tool. Remember healthy hair is beautiful hair.

7. Colour Depositing Masque

This is a great tool to help you maintain a fresh color . It can be more complicated when you have multiple colours in the hair so please do not purchase without consulting your stylist . I recommend my clients do this once a week to help prevent fading. You should be cautious as it can stain everything so please use gloves and rinse in a sink you are not attached to. Otherwise at Vocare we offer a complimentary touch up within the first two weeks if any fading occurs. After the two weeks you may pay product cost to have it done in salon at a reasonable rate. Salon visits take out the guess work but do not always work for everyone . This is where a masque if you are confident can be a great way to stretch out salon visits and maintain your colours vibrancy in the comfort of your own home.

We hope that this helps you understand the up keep of fashion colours better . Remember if you stay within the guidelines given your colour will last. It will even have a slower more gradual fade out .

Hair colour during pregnancy

Every woman when starting a family wonders about this controversial topic. I'm here to shed light on colouring your hair during pregnancy and help put you at ease no matter what you decide to do.

Hair by Monique

Hair by Monique

Colouring your hair during pregnancy is something that each individual needs to decide for themselves with some clear facts given. Every woman wants to feel beautiful during this time when our bodies and hormones are changing(which can sometimes feel nearly impossible). However there can be an upside for some women as they have beautiful hair during pregnancy. This doesn't mean you should skip visits to the salon because as we know after giving birth our hair and hormones change again. Whether you decide to colour or not regular maintaince is key. Your stylist will be able to help you maintain and address any issues you have with your hair during your appointment. I believe knowledge is power, so always talk to your salon professional about ways to help your hair whatever your concern may be. Some things to think about while pregnant and wanting to colour your hair :

1.  Can hair colour affect the fetus(baby)?

There has been no evidence that hair colour can affect the fetus. Most doctors recommend waiting until the 2nd trimester just to be on the safe side. Most mothers wait so that they have piece of mind during pregnancy.  This doesn't  mean that mothers who don't wait are harming their babies. I always tell mothers to do what is best for them. Science basically suggests that the fumes are the worst part of the colouring process; however if you are in a well ventilated area there isn't much to worry about. Colour is made up of peroxide, ammonia, and pigment (to keep it simple). The molecules from pigment are too large to enter the blood stream. When mixed with ammonia and peroxide everything harmful evaporates leaving essentially a paste on the skin. The person most at risk is the one doing your hair since they are standing above you during the oxidation process(directly inhaling the fumes). Usually the major concern is what is being absorbed by the skin as that can dramatically affect a fetus. As we know the active ingredients evaporate leaving very little concern. So if you stay in a well ventilated area and ensure your scalp is free of abrasions all should be well since very little is actually absorbed by the skin into the blood stream.

Should I be using all natural products ?

This is also an individual choice but choosing a natural alternative limits possible risk (not yet proven) and harmful fumes . So if it's available to you give it a try. At Vocare hair we decided to use a natural and ammonia free product called O&M that is just as effective as other colour formulas. We know that depending on each person, body chemistry, and lifestyle preferences your choices will be different . We have an array of products to cater to each client based on their needs. Many salons also have this policy as not one product will suit all people. Pregnancy makes us much more conscious of what goes on and in our bodies. Choosing a natural and ammonia free product limits allergic reactions and harmful fumes from the equation. To learn more about what makes up hair colour and the natural alternatives refer to our blog about why we use O&M.

Can I use henna as a natural alternative ?

I would steer clear of henna. As we know henna has a distinct brown colour when applied to the skin. For hair it is much different. To change hair colour metallic salts are added to create your desired red, or orange tones. The metallic salts such as lead acetate and lead sulfide create a compound henna which can be harmful and later react with hair colour when you decide to go back to your stylist. It can be hard to know what your henna contains as some do not have proper labelling. Compound henna or not I would steer clear! If you have already used henna a test strand will be needed to make sure a future colouring service is successful . Do not hide this from your hair dresser as compound henna when lightened can turn an array of colours and even cause hair to melt and bubble. So when deciding on a colour Please do not choose henna unless you will be a "henna" only user.

If colour is safe can I use box colour?

The short answer for this one is no. While pregnant you want to ensure you use professonal products as we know exactly what this product contains and we can tailor it to your hair needs. With box colour the chemicals inside are harsh and can create stronger more harmful fumes. We also know there is no guarantee with box colour so if a colour correction is needed you will be exposed to these fumes more then we would like. Limit how often you colour and see a professional to be safe!

Does my hair change during pregnancy?

Hair can change depending on many factors . Pregnancy and medication can greatly effect the hair and cause interesting colour outcomes. This is another reason I always suggest seeing a professional and doing a test strand. We are well equipped to shift and adjust to help you get your desired look. Please be patient and understand that now that your body is changing your hair colour may too! Aside from colouring your hair your hair texture can change or become more dry and brittle during this time. Use you hair appointments to learn how to deal with your possible hair challenges. We can help by recommending product and proper maintenance during that time.

Are their alternatives to an all over colour ?

Of course ! There are many techniques we use depending on your desired look when colouring hair. You can highlight without even touching your scalp. Any colour applied after is very gentle and shouldn't be a concern. Highlighting is a great way to utilize your natural root colour to create a different look that will have a seamless grow out. A seamless grow out is very helpful between finding time for you and your new baby and may be worth trying. There are so many options for your hair with colour. Always try to be open with your stylist and discuss all options to suit you and your lifestyle whether it's highlighting or not!

A quick break down of things discussed :

  1. No abrasions on scalp! This will minimize what enters the blood stream and minimizes any potential reactions and discomfort.
  2. Space out your hair appointments . Doing this doesn't need to be painful . Discuss some low maintenance  options that minimize your exposure during pregnancy
  3. Well ventilated areas only !
  4. Always do  a test strand before your first appointment when pregnant (if possible). This will help the stylist see how your hormones are effecting the chemical process during coloring.

We hope this blog was informative and allows you to feel empowered abour making the right decision for you. If you are expecting congratulations and we wish you all the best in this new journey. If you have any questions please contact us!

How to Get the Most Out of Your Hair Trial

Up-do by Monique

Up-do by Monique

It is the season of Grad, Weddings, and Outdoor Photo-shoots.  I have so many clients un-sure of what to expect when booking a trial run before their event day ! There are many reasons why this step is important. I have outlined below some tips for you to consider !

 1. Book your trial at least 1-2 months in advance

This allows you to have a clear vision of what to expect on your big day. No one likes surprises and this helps ensure you know exactly what to expect. I usually do not recommend booking over 5 to 6 months earlier then your desired date as then you can forget what style you truly loved or change your mind several times before hand. This can potentially also confuse your stylist. 2-months in advance is still enough time to lock down the desired stylist for your day so no need to stress. However each stylist's schedule can be different so try to work out a plan that best suites both of you and do your research around the 5-month mark (just to be safe).

2. Bring 2-3 images of your desired style

Pictures are an amazing tool when expectations are reasonable. It allows for more open and honest dialogue. I love seeing images of up-styles clients pick as it gives a very clear depiction of what they hope to look like . Let your stylist suggest hair pieces , extensions or alternatives that will suite your hair type. A lot of up-styles have hair added to them to create fullness and length. This is where expectations need to be realistic. If you need to make adjustments try to be open so that the stylist can help you look your very best. The most important part of this is the honest dialogue .  We cannot read your mind so ensure you are clear and that your vision is strong . The more clear your vision is the more able you will be to discuss all options. Also ensure you are with a stylist who is willing to experiment with you to help your desired look become a reality. Any creative project includes both parties equal input. Find someone who can listen as much as they suggest . This way you will feel heard and will be able to create a plan that you feel both of you understand . Building a great relationship with your stylist will make you a team ;and that is exactly what you need to feel taken care of and at ease. Pictures of styles can help with all areas of this process greatly and helps break the ice to conversation during the trial.

3. Come alone or bring 1 person with you (max)

Make sure if you bring a friend or loved one with you that this person is trust worthy and knows how to communicate well with others . Please keep in mind having a great gal with you can be fun and an asset, but it can also be a hindrance on the experience with your stylist. You have limited time with your stylist to communicate exactly what you want, to build trust, and understanding ! Nothing makes this harder then when you have someone interrupting , not listening, or distracting the bride/grad onto other topics in relation to the big day.  Always keep in mind that in order to deliver and execute  great service the client needs to be involved/present as much as the stylist. Input from your friends and family is important, so consider scheduling a night out after to show off your hair/chosen style. This way you can see their genuine reactions and also see how the style wears through out the evening. This gives you a great idea of what it will feel and be like on your special day. You can also then give some constructive criticism to your stylist as well if need be.

4. Take photographs

I love to try at least 2-3 variations of a style to see what the bride loves the most; because as we know options are important. This is a great tool to utilize to help you look back on and make sure you are happy with your choices/chosen style . It can be tricky to remember so dont hesitate to take a photo to help with keeping your options in order. It also leaves a visual to see what adjustments need to be made in the future . If your stylist is close to your desired look but your not completely sold give the stylist a second chance . I mean how many dresses did you have to try before finding to right one? I believe it can be the same with hair. Sometimes we need to try on a couple styles or styles we never thought of to find "the look".

5. Make sure the stylist books enough time to try multiple looks

As I stated above you need to take the time with your stylist to ensure you have the desired look. Don't rush the process it's important at this time to discuss all options. Try some of both parties suggestions and see how you feel. When you see the style on you, you understand more clearly your likes and dislikes. It really disappoints me when clients tell me a stylist said no or didn't even bother to try some sugessted looks . My opinion is a guide however your happiness is and should be our goal. You need to find a stylist that makes you their priority and takes the time to explain or show why something may not be for you. A stylist who does this shows they are confident, educated and will most likely do as much as they can to not let you down for your big day. To me having a team feeling to the trial approach is a must so trying as many looks as possible is a great way to build a solid look and relationship !

6. Bring all accessories !

This is important so that you can choose a style that works with the accessory chosen. Whether it's beads or a veil accessories can make or break the whole look and approach  to create a desired style. Be as prepared as possible with your accessories. If you find an accessory after your trial bring it in or confirm with the stylist that this will still work with the style chosen. No surprises leaves a smooth and efficient approach the day of . Believe it or not some stylists even practice your style before your big day so they can make it even better then your trial!  So please don't leave any details like accessories out !

7. Create a Timeline for your big day

Discuss what time you need to have your hair and makeup complete so that your stylist can let you know what time you should start .  If your stylist is able to come to you this can always ease the stress of travel. If not allow plenty of time for travel! Allow hair and makeup to coordinate themselves accordingly between you and your party. Hair and makeup can work together when at your location by rotating between you and your party to ensure an efficient and pampering time for everyone! Discuss all options and see what is available to you and be open to suggestions. Like I said team work on this day is important find a stylist willing to work around a schedule that will prevent any unnesssary stress.

8. Come with dirty hair !

This is an important step that gets forgotten! Please don't worry about what your stylist may think. At least 24-hr dirty hair is amazing for holding curl and helping your style last. If you come with clean hair it can be too slippery to pin and curl will fall much too quickly. To achieve the best results please come with "dirty" Hair.

9. Try to have fun !

We all want to feel and look our best so don't forget to have fun and enjoy the journey! Events can be stressful but make sure your team of people are reliable, efficient, and positive ! Don't be too serious , learn to laugh and enjoy the pampering . If all else fails at least you will have some great stories to tell.

How to maintain that Beautiful Blonde

Colour by Monique

Colour by Monique

Those of us who lighten for the summer always want that pure, beautiful blonde. As we know these blondes take time and maintenance to keep them looking fresh and healthy. Believe it or not it is your stylists job to help you keep it looking this way as long as possible and this is where treatment plans and products come into play (at home care is essential like it or not to continuous hair perfection)

I know you don't want your blonde looking like the photo below after 8-10 weeks . Therefore I have outlined steps and products to use to keep the yellow hair monster away from your beautiful blonde at home!

With proper at home maintence you can minimize this yellow from becoming so promenient

With proper at home maintence you can minimize this yellow from becoming so promenient

Why does this happen to blonde hair!?

Blonde hair is lighter and more porous.  If the hair is very porous this means it accepts a lot of water or colour and quickly lets it go which explains why toners on blonde hair tend to wash out very quickly. When porous the hair can absorb unwanted tones such as yellow from minerals, green from copper pipes or chlorine; instead of keeping in the wanted tone. If your hair is healthy the cuticles create a barrier locking in nessesary moisture and wanted tones instead of quickly releasing it.

Water quality can effect the hair dramatically and can interact causing even extreme colour changes such as pink ! So please try and take steps to ensure that you have good water quality at home ! There are even filtration systems that can attach to your shower head so if no matter how hard you try your still seeing yellow it may help to add this additional helper to your shower routine .

What are products I can add to my arsenal to help minimize yellow?

This is where things can become a little more complex so below I will outline all the nessasary products that I keep on hand for all hair types to prevent fading and colour changes!

Olaplex  3 step system

If you are one of my clients you know that I LOVE this product. Not only is it effective but it also smells great too! The reason you need this is as we know blondes can be dry, brittle , and have some damage. This product repairs damage from the inside out without keratin and can be used while toning and lifting the hair creating soft and protected locks. This in salon treatment needs to be maintained at home to help add additional benefits and maximize the results seen. You cannot expect to see lasting results without having a great and lasting hair routine. As we know healthy hair is beautiful hair and ensuring it is healthy can help your current and future results. Psst ! It can even help your toner stay much longer as well! Hands down this is a treatment line to stick with and use once a week.

Purple Shampoo and Conditioner

This combo in the shower can take place of a toner. When used together it can diminish unwanted yellow! This combo should be alternated with a colour safe shampoo and conditioner . However if your very light(white) you may want to only use the purple combo. I recommend starting with conditioner if your seeing results continue to use whenever you feel you need it. If you need more power introduce the purple shampoo for extra purple power and leave in the hair for up to a minitue. Some people love them together and others use one or the other . If your hair is really yellow you can put purple conditioner on dry or slightly damp hair to allow more purple to deposit into the hair. I encourage clients to play around and see what works best for them.  The nice thing is if it goes to purple in a couple shampoos you will see it diminish . So do not worry it is not permanent!

 Clarifying Shampoo

This is nessasary for people who live in areas where minerals in the water are high or for those who get yellow no matter what ! Use this to lift out yellow caused by product build-up, minerals, lake water and chlorine. Use this before applying a purple conditioner. This will help open the hair cuticle making it more receptive to depositing the purple tone while also deeply cleansing the hair. This is only to be used when nessesary as it can be drying .

Leave-In Conditioner

There are many great leave-ins my favourites are Unique one or Redken all in one ! They are light, low alcohol content so it doesn't dry the hair out and they also giveyou UV/heat protection which is essential to lasting colour ! Not only can water discolour the hair but sun can too ! Just like your skin it needs protection from the sun. Using a leave-in in the summer is like sun screen for the hair! Apply to damp hair and blow dry in . Some even have purple pigment in them just in case you  feel you need that extra power to remove yellow from the hair !

 Heat protection spray

This is nessasary to apply to dry hair before heat styling ! It protects the hair from burning and losing moisture. When the hair is burned or dry it can yellow as well. I recommend Heat protection spray from label M or Damage manager from Kevin Murphy for light and effective protection. If you see smoke coming from your irons and you don't have a product in your hair you are burning out the moisture in your hair. Instead of losing moisture make sure it's emitting off the residue of your heat protector instead.

So that's all Folks the nessasary products for healthy blonde and vibrant hair!

"Hair Elastics" Think before you tie

Did you know that traditional hair Elastics can be a contributing factor to hair dryness, split ends, ad breakage !  Thank goodness more of us are catching on and there are hair ties that can be used to prevent and minimize damage to the hair. Below are some pointers and products we carry to help you with your healthy hair goals !

Why do the common Elastics hurt your lushes locks  ?

  1. They allow you to tie your hair too tight causing pressure points that can cause breakage
  2. The ones with metal fasteners can pull the hair out and snag. Ouch!
  3. They are not wide enough to evenly distribute pressure which can cause indentation and if tied in the same place enough will cause breakage

What products can I use to help?

  • Invisibobble

This product helps address the issues of indentation and breakage with not creating pressure points on the hair. It allows you to tie the hair back without allowing you to tie it so tightly creating a safe guard for you and your hair. There is also no metal which means no snagging ! YAY! Invisibobble's are made with polyurethane plastic so when your elastic stretches too much there is no need to rush and buy a new one . Just place it in hot water and the polyurethane product will shrink! Polyurethane does not absorb dirt or bacteria and can be easily cleaned making it great for children or those with allergies. If you need more FAQS here's a link to their website http://www.invisibobble.com/faq/

  • Knotties

These hair ties are wide and have a variety of great patterns to boot ! These also prevent pressure points minimizing damage and pressure on the hair .

What are other ways to prevent breakage from hair ties?

  • Don't pull your hair back so tightly !  Doing so puts  an extreme amount of pressure on the hairline, which is very sensitive. In fact, if you wear your hair super-tight and pulled back day-to-day, it can damage hair follicles to the point that they fall out, leading to a permanent receding hairline and headaches.
  •  Try not to wear your hair up to bed that can cause stress on the hair as you roll, toss and turn in your sleep. If you are concerned about keeping your hair in place you may use a silk scarf or pillow case to reduce friction! It also helps to prevent dryness of the hair as silk does not suck out the moisture like cotton pillow cases do !
  •   Be gentle when the hair is wet !  We love using a leave in conditioner and the wet brush  to help get out tangles without pulling to hard which can also cause breakage! When hair is wet it can stretch double its size 50% as opposed to dry hair which is only 20%. If your hair is compromised it can stretch to the point of no return leading to breakage !
  • Don't style the same way eveytime. If you put pressure repeatedly over the same area it can cause the hair to weaken the same way a hot tool can harm the hair if used over and over in the same area. Try a low pony tail or use large claw clips to pull the hair back and out of your face.

Our Mission

"Why fit in when you were born to stand out " - Dr. Seuss

So I thought I would kick off my blog starting with why I wanted to branch out on my own. People may think because I'm now working for myself I think my ideas are superior, that I'm wanting to compete with neighbouring businesses, or that I don't have what it takes to be within another business. As we all know in our hearts it is much deeper and more real than that.

I don't believe I'm better than anyone else, or that I'm somehow superior to another business, however I do believe I have to do something with purpose, vision, and passion. We all have a greater purpose beyond just showing up to work and making money. I've found mine with mentor-ship, education and community.

The more I worked for others the more I realized I had something different to offer; a passion to work with integrity and lead people to a new way of thinking.

I noticed a lot of successful people or happy people let go of things they can't change and embarked on the things they could. This inspired me to log a journal of all the things I didn't like within my industry. I decided to use this journal as a tool to take action to change it. One of my big ideas became Vocare Hair Studio.

A lot of people within the beauty industry today have it right however the small amount I encountered had it in my opinion all wrong. This made my eyes open as to what I wanted and who I wanted to  become. I want my place of work to empower others , allow others to have value, purpose and to help them see things that they may not see on their own. All of this sounds pretty simple right !? That's what I thought, but I've noticed this simplicity and thinking that people matter does often fall to the way side. I believe this mission is beyond me and has a greater purpose of bettering an industry. Talking to many talented stylists that end up quitting before they start saddens me and I feel it could be prevented if we focused less on ourselves and more on mentorship. I want to help change this for others even if their mission does not always directly benefit me in a worldly sense.

As a person with integrity you always want to see future generations have more ,worry less, and you want to see a progression in people that is for a greater good. This is what I hope to see in the people's lives(and hair)that I am lucky enough to touch.

Being a new business owner I now look at my purchases in a new light. I want to see more of and support more mission based businesses within my community. Many have big ideas and it excites me to have my purchases come from companies with purpose and passion. I believe each business has a special piece of the community and can utilize their wonderful network for positivity and change.

I am so grateful for the amount of people who have supported me and continue to help me, my mission and my business grow.  Thank you and I am excited to learn, grow, and embark on this new journey with you!

Why We Use O&M

Have you ever had discomfort during a color service and just thought it was normal? Have you ever had a hot sensation that lasts even after you have left the salon and rinsed your color? Then you just might be allergic to something in your color!

Recently I have encountered many clients that thought these symptoms were normal or have experienced these symptoms using several different color lines. This made me look further for a product that could help and of course I used a lovely client as a model to find a product that did not cause her discomfort and was as "pure" as possible. We found O&M which stands for Original Mineral. They do not test on animals and is still highly effective in covering those "God Given" platinum highlights in which we call grey. It is amazing to me how many people do not color their hair or do it less often because they felt they had no other option. So of course I felt compelled to help. Below I will touch on what makes this  product special, ingredients to help you make an educated decision, and commonly asked questions to make all this much more clear. At Vocare we carry a variety of amazing products to help give you a versatile and tailored experience no gimmicks here! We let the hair do the talking.

I have not experienced these symptoms should I switch to this product?

I am a huge advocate for the phrase "if it's not broken don't fix it". However with that said I think if you are making an educated decision and want to switch by all means go for it; but here's the catch. Just because it is "natural" this does not mean you may not react to a product, sometimes natural occurring minerals and pigments can still harm someone who has a different body chemistry and in rare cases you may be allergic to pigment all together. Other products are not bad however we want all clients to have beautiful hair and to have choices therefore we brought this product in. If you do or do not have symptoms I suggest getting a patch test on your consult to ensure there is no reaction.

What is a Patch Test?

A patch test is when we leave on color for 24-48 hours in advance and wait to see if swelling occurs in that area. If swelling or irritation occur then you may need to try another product if it doesn't you may proceed with a color service. YAY!

Why are Patch Tests not done regularly?

If you have never colored your hair a consult and patch test is a MUST

If you have had previous irritation a patch test is a MUST

Once a preliminary patch test has been done there is no need to repeat for every appointment. A hair stylist should always be asking new clients their hair history, what products the client has used, and if they have ever experienced discomfort. This gives us great insight to what we feel is safe for the client moving forward and if a patch test is needed. There are many clients who I feel safe coloring without a patch test after asking those questions however if you ever feel a client is with holding information reschedule and do a patch test ! We are hair doctors so please always be honest with your stylist it will save you a lot of problems in the end. I know we live in an I WANT IT NOW society but as we know patience can prevent disappointment and disasters!

Out of nowhere after years of coloring my hair I had a reaction.... Why?

So this can be tricky it can be many factors but a change in hormones, medication, and body chemistry can be factors. These factors can even change how the color takes to or affects the hair. Either way it simply can happen so this why we decided to have several products on hand because no two people or products are made the same.

What chemicals can be in hair color and why are they causing me discomfort?

PPD

Paraphenylenediamine is a chemical substance that is widely and traditionally used as a permanent hair dye. People who are highly allergic to PPD usually cannot use most color lines. Some color lines claim to be PPD free and still contain 0.06% of it which I learned by trial and error with the lovely client I used as a model to test these products.
Allergies to PPD are common and reactions include dermatitis, reddening and swelling of the scalp and face.
In some severe allergy cases the eyelids may completely close and can result in contact urticaria and anaphylaxis.

RESORCINOL

Used as a coloring agent and is also commonly found in topical acne treatments.

Now reading below take the word suspected very carefully it does not mean this evidence has been proven and I work with these chemicals everyday so lets please take it with a grain of salt here!

Suspected to be an endocrine toxicity hazard
Suspected to be a human immune system toxicant
Suspected to be toxic to wildlife and the environment

AMMONIA

A chemical that swells the hair cuticle so that color can be absorbed all the way through the hair. This is what makes color so effective in most cases however if you are sensitive to it this color line can help and can still be effective without ammonia. I will still use ammonia based products for color corrections as I need the power to see results that clients want. So if your changing your color with ammonia free there will be more stages to changing color. Unpleasant odor. Many people become allergic due to exposure and suffer from itchy scalps and watery/red eyes while getting their hair colored.

What makes this product so special?

This product is great for those clients looking for a alternative due to irritation and allergies. They are one of the first hair brands to produce professional grade ammonia, resorcinol and PPD free permanent (and actually PPD free unlike other brands I have used and researched) hair color making it gentle on hair, scalp and hands.

What are the ingredients?

I thought this chart says it all and felt it was necessary to share!

If you look below you can also see our product on the Left is safe for people with gluten sensitivities and Celiac Disease. Our other color line Wella is also safe for gluten sensitivities but not recommended for Celiac as traces of gluten may be present! See and that is why we have options.

We hope this helps you better understand hair color and allergies a bit better. Please share with others to educate and also help those seeking a painless hair color service. If you ever have any further questions you may email us directly !
